Tuesday Intros & Teaser Tuesdays - 'Everyday Psychokillers: A History for Girls' by Lucy Corin

This is one of the most beautiful days, weather wise, we've had here in the last two weeks. It's so warm and I think I might actually have a sunburn as well. Tuesday is a great day to introduce one of your reads to other bloggers through some amazing days. Tuesday Intros is hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea and Teaser Tuesday is hosted by MizB over at Should Be Reading. This week I'm using a novel I was just accepted for review for called Everyday Psychokillers; a History for Girls by Lucy Corin.
In Everyday Psychokillers violence is the subject of everyday life: a disturbing extravaganza in which all those around the narrator seem to become participants, willingly or not. And at its center are the interchangeable young girls, mostly thrilled to know themselves the object of so much desire and terror.
Intros:
'In the life of every girl I know, at one time or another, in school, in a museum, she's shown a replica of the Venus de Milo. For some girls, Venus is a translucent projection, for some plaster doll. The girl stands near the statue with her best friend, and somebody is explaining how Venus is so beautiful, and how, to this very day, she's the most beautiful woman in myth and history combined, that she is beauty and love. Then the grown-ups wander away and the girls look together.' p.1
I like this beginning. The style is very easy yet quite evocative. I'm really interested in how this story is going to develop.

Teasers:
'Life passes through air, through bodies that are somehow incidental and sacred at once. If you took the museum at its word, you'd never know.' p.25
I love the first line, because it's so true and at the same time sounds like the kind of deep metaphorical crap you see printed on a flower field background!

and
'We talked about songs on the radio and a couple other things, a couple of the horses, and a dog that had been hanging around.' p.50
This actually sounds like a very normal and realistic conversation. I wanted to include the next line as well but it felt like a bit of a spoiler so I decided to leave it.

I think this will be a really interesting novel to read. What book are you teasing and introducing?

  7. That's a compelling opening. I'd read more to find out if the girls talked about the statue and what they said. I'm also wondering about the significance of Venus in the story. Sounds like a good read.
