Friday Memes Galore

Alison Can Read Feature & FollowFollow Friday is hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee. This week's question is:

Have you met your favourite author and have a picture?

I don't really know who my favourite author is, but quite a lot of the ones I like are unfortunately dead. Meeting Tolkien is never going to happen. I hope to one day get to meet J.K. Rowling and drop dead at her feet, but that might take some time. I haven't been to a lot of book conventions, which is a shame because they look like such fun. I probably should really start going to them. I did once "meet" Carlos Ruiz Zafon at a Q&A but we didn't take pictures and I was to scared to actually talk to him so I mainly just gawked!

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Billy over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer.

Book Blogger HopHow do you decide what blog to follow?

What I love about memes like these is that because of it you get to drop by a whole new bunch of blogs. I usually follow a blog if I like the way they write their reviews or the way they answer the questions. Something that puts me off at times is a confusing lay out, so when I see a blog that just looks nice aesthetically, I sometimes follow as well. Part of the whole book blogging fun however, I feel, is also just randomly following blogs and see what they put out there.

Book Beginning is hosted by Rose City Reader and Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice. This week I'm using Harper Lee's 'To Kill A Mockingbird', which I, to my shame, still haven't read!

BB:
'When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow. When it healed, and Jem’s fears of never being able to play football were assuaged, he was seldom self-conscious about his injury.' p.1
I like how the first two lines already tell us something about Jem's character, namely that he doesn't give up in the face of possible defeat, yet is also scared at times. That's an important mix of character traits to have!

F56:
'Atticus did not seem to realize this, or if he did he didn’t care.  I hated him for that, but when you are in trouble you become easily tired: soon I was hiding in his lap and his arms were around me.' p.56
I love the second sentence. Sometimes when you're just scared and tired you need somewhere to hide and that could be the person you were angry at before. We all need comfort every once in a while.

So, how about you? Have you ever met your favourite author? And what makes you follow a blog?

  1. "but when you are in trouble you become easily tired"...Great line.

  2. I haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird in years and had forgotten how perfect Lee's writing is! I've only met one favorite author and very much enjoyed it but for some reason the idea of meeting others doesn't do much for me. I'm like you with finding new blogs by visiting different ones and following those that grab me.

  4. I'll confess: I've never read To Kill a Mockingbird either! But when I do, I'll cast Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch since the movie was so wonderful. I agree with you about the visual appeal of some blogs. If the page is too "messy" with visual blight, I probably won't follow. But then I wonder. Is it fair to rely on first impressions?

  5. I love To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee's storytelling is so natural and beautifully simplistic. I hope you enjoy it!
    Happy Reading,

  6. To Kill a Mockingbird is definitely one of my favorites. There are plenty of classics on my TBR list I haven't gotten to either.

  7. Like you, I don't make it to too many conventions. Wish I did. I do go to some conferences, so I meet local authors. This last year at LTUE I got to talk, very briefly, with Brandon Sanderson, which was fun.

  10. I have a similar answer. If I have the same interests, I follow.

Ohhhh...I certainly agree that a confusing layout is a turnoff. I like things organized and easily found. :)

I also agree about great reviews. Some folks have such unique ways of writing them. Such fun to see different methods.

    GREAT ANSWER.

    Have a great weekend.

    Happy Hopping!!
