Throwback Thursday

I found a new meme, Throwback Thursday, and I should be a lot better at this one than at the ones where you highlight upcoming releases. It's hosted by these two: The Housework Can Wait and Never Too Fond of Books.

Here’s how it works:
1. Pick any book released more than 5 years ago. Adult, YA, Children’s; doesn’t matter. Any great book will do.
2. Write up a short summary of the book (include the title, author, and cover art) and an explanation of why you love it. Make sure to link back to The Housework Can Wait and Never Too Fond of Books in your post.
3. Link up your post at The Housework Can Wait or Never Too Fond of Books.
4. Visit as many blogs as you can, reminisce about books you loved, and discover some “new” books for your TBR list!

Ways and MeansSounds good, no? I usually talk about classics etc, so this should work. Here I go. I chose 'Ways and Means' by Noel Coward, which was first produced in 1936.

One of the "Tonight at 8:30" series produced in London and New York. In a bedroom in Mrs. Lloyd Ransome's fabulous villa on the Cote d'Azur are heiress Stella Cartwright and her husband, a gambler. They are plagued by debts and their prolonged stay at the villa is becoming embarrassing when a scandalous chauffeur attempts to rob them and ends up saving their honor.

I chose this play because it is very short and very funny Toby and Stella Cartwright are hilarious together and are almost like an old couple, except for all the gambling, drinking and scandal. Here is an excerpt:

Toby: 'No talent - that's what's wrong with you - no marketable talent whatsoever.Stella: 'You seem to forget that on a certain bleak day in 1928 I gave my life into your keeping.'Toby: 'marriage is a sacrament, a mystic rite, and you persist in regarding it as a sort of plumber's estimate.'Stella: 'Be quiet. Where was I?'Toby: 'Wandering along the path of memory, dear, with a singularly nasty expression.'Stella: 'You will admit, I suppose, that we live beyond our income?'Toby: 'You have a genius for understatement.'

Maybe it is just me, but I love the sarcasm. It's only 12 pages and I definitely recommend it. So, how about you?

  1. 12 pages sounds like it would work, even for my attention span ;-) So glad you discovered our meme and have joined in this week! And I'm a big fan of sarcasm too :-)
