Friday Friyay: 'Once and Future Witches' by Alix E. Harrow

Happy Friday! Another week closer to Christmas, another week closer to my winter break. I'm so ready to just read for a week long. One of the books I'm hoping to read this winter is Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow.

In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters--James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna--join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.

Book Beginnings is at home on Rose City Reader, hosted by Gilion Dumas, and Friday 56 at Freda's Voice, hosted by Freda. I'll also be joining the Book Blogger Hop, hosted by Billy over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer.

BB:

'An Introduction
There's no such thing as witches, but there used to be.'

Ch. 1
Once upon a time there were three sisters.' p. 3

Love both of these openings so I needed to share both! I like the almost textbook-style opening of the Introduction, but I utterly adore the fairy tale-style opening of the first chapter. I just know I'm going to love this one so hard!

F56:

'Juniper looks at her - this little old woman with a powdered wig and a big office on the fancy side of town - and understands perfectly well.' p.56

I wonder what Juniper understands! What I saw from the lines around it, it sounds like Juniper may have to choose a side, or choose a fight. I know that I definitely want to know more.

This week's question was suggested by Julie over at Stepping Stones Book Reviews:

If you were in a book, would you rather be the main character or in the background?

Ooh I don't know... I think this really depends on the genre, and even then it's tricky! Because if I'm the main character in a crime thriller I may have to hunt down a killer (difficult) but if I'm in the background I may be the one who was killed (bummer). If it's a romance novel then as the main character I may be getting hot and heavy (nice), but I may also go through some heart-ache (bummer). As a side-character I may not get either, making that a bit of a wash. If we settle on fantasy then I think I'd be good with either, but maybe would prefer a background character, because I get to do cool things and have fun powers, hopefully, and probably won't have a heavy destiny weighing on my shoulders.

So that's it for me! What are you reading?

Comments

  1. I've heard so many good things about this book! I really like both of those openings, too, and how different they are, but the way they both still definitely pull you in. I hope you enjoy this one, and I can't wait to pick it up myself!

  2. Such a beautifully designed cover. I enjoy reading historical fiction if it is done well with some attempt at authenticity. My Friday book selection
