Friday Friyay: 'The Girl with the Louding Voice' by Abi Daré

I finished my thesis and literally handed it in just an hour ago! I'm so proud of myself for actually meeting the deadline, since most of my classmates went for an extension to work on through the summer. But I'm also very proud of myself for the work itself, for the research. Fingers crossed the grade matches it! Now I'm just planning aaalll of my summer reading, including this book I should've gotten to two years ago.

I don't just want to be having any kind voice . . .
I want a louding voice.

At fourteen, Adunni dreams of getting an education and giving her family a more comfortable home in her small Nigerian village. Instead, Adunni's father sells her off to become the third wife of an old man. When tragedy strikes in her new home, Adunni flees to the wealthy enclaves of Lagos, where she becomes a house-girl to the cruel Big Madam, and prey to Big Madam's husband. But despite her situation continuously going from bad to worse, Adunni refuses to let herself be silenced. And one day, someone hears her.

Book Beginnings is at home on Rose City Reader, hosted by Gilion Dumas, and Friday 56 at Freda's Voice, hosted by Freda. I'll also be joining the Book Blogger Hop, hosted by Billy over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer.

'Chapter 1

This morning, Papa call me inside the parlour.

He was sitting inside the sofa with no cushion and looking me.' 1%

I love it when authors play with language but I also love it when authors write in "non standard" English, if that makes sense. There is probably a better term for this, but I don't want to label this pidgin or anything like that, since I'm not sure yet that is what it is. Anyways, I feel like Adunni's voice comes through so strongly even in these two lines.

F56:

'My chest is burning that she is talking bad about Ms. Tia. I am feeling fire in my heart, angry fire, and I am wanting to shout on Big Madam to tell her that Ms. Tia is having honey voice and a kind heart' 56%

I cut off part of the end of the sentence because it could be spoiler-y. At least it was to me, but now I'm just curious to get here in the book. Also, this quote fits my thesis topic so beautifully I simply had to share it. Keep that angry fire burning!

This week's question was submitted by Elizabeth over at Silver's Reviews:

Do you post your reviews before publication day or wait until close to or on publication date?

This is such a good question and I'm actually really curious as to everyone else's answers. Because I don't know what the rule on this is...

What I do is basically wait until the publication day itself to publish the review on my blog and Goodreads, because I'm never sure if publishers want it beforehand. But then on the other hand, surely they want reviews in advance to build momentum? Basically I stick to how review embargos kinda work for movies, I think a week before publication is ok, but too far in advance might not work. I do upload the review to NetGalley as soon as I've written it, since then they already know my thoughts etc. I would love some guidance on this from all y'all other book bloggers!

That's it from me! What do you think about The Girl with the Louding Voice?

Comments

  1. Might have thought a little more about louding in the title.

    louding - Urban Dictionaryhttps://www.urbandictionary.com › define › term=loudi...
A slang term for marijuana of high quality.

That aside.... What does that even mean...louding voice? If I have to think too hard about the title, I'm not picking up the book.

    Hope you're enjoying it.

  4. I do as I'm told! If an author requests that I read their book then they tell me when they want the review up and Blog Tours I am given a specific date.

  6. Congratulations!

As for the reviews I'm curious to see what people do too, since I don't really do ARC reviews so don't have a lot of experience with that.

  7. I'm the same way. I review on or right after publication day. I do think a little bit before publication day (a week or so sounds good) is okay, but I know publishers don't want it up too early or people will forget about it, as you said.

  8. We read this book for book club and everyone was so delighted with it. Did you notice how her English improves throughout the book? So clever. My book this week is The Heart's Invisible Furies
